In 2009, The Japan Foundation, Sydney will present two new national Nihongo events for school students. They are ‘Art Speaks Japanese Comes Alive: Art Contest' and 'Japanese Video Festival'. We are looking forward to your entries. |

Art Speaks Japanese Comes Alive! : Art Contest |
| |
We would like to inform you about the 'Art Speaks Japanese Comes Alive! 2009: Art Contest'. The objective of this contest is to encourage teachers and students to engage with our new resource kit “Art Speaks Japanese”.
This contest requires students to create an artwork based on the sixteen artworks and/or related tasks in the resource using any medium of their choice. All works must be inspired by the resource and include some Japanese language. Some examples of possible entries include:
- A poster for peace (No.15, task 3 for middle years)
- A tattoo design (No.11, task 5 for middle years)
- An original creation of an ''obake'' (No.8, for both middle and senior schools)
- Haiku (No.13, task 4 for middle years)
- A calligraphy piece (No.3, for both middle and senior years)
- A comic strip creation based on any of the language skits or themes (Eg. No.3, task 3 for middle years)
- A photographic work (No.15 and No.16)
- A kimono (No.5 and No.9)
- A video (submit video works to the Japanese Video Festival - see below)

All works must be submitted by 31 October 2009. Artworks will be displayed on The Japan Foundation,Sydney website and at various events around the states. The NSW Art Gallery will award prizes. For more information, please contact angela_oconnell@jpf.org.au.

Japanese Video Festival (ビデオまつり) |
| |
The objective of this festival is to enable students to use their creative abilities to showcase their Japanese. Students can give vent to their dramatic, musical, directing or other skills while enjoyably using Japanese. The task is to produce a short film or animation of up to 4 minutes. Works may include, songs, language skits or dramas and documentaries, but all works must include Japanese language. Entries will be accepted on video CD or DVD.
There will be 4 divisions: |

- Primary
- Junior Secondary
- Senior Secondary
- Tertiary

Awards will be given to videos which excel in certain areas eg. script, performance, music, costume, ensemble work. The award winning videos will be put on our website.
All works must be submitted by 30 September 2009. Some videos will be shown on the JF,Sydney website and at various venues around the states.
